Aspiring environmental scientist wins MEAs ACP short video competition

The Caribbean Hub of the European Union-funded project for Capacity-Building related to Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) in the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Countries, has announced that the winner of its Short Video Contest is aspiring scientist, Ms Lyn-Marie Lynton of Barbados.

A four-man Guyanese team pitched their award-winning solution to tackle illegal logging and deforestation, leading them to win the 5G for Change Hackathon ahead of over 150 countries.

The four Guyanese, under the name “Team Frame Perfect” developed an Artificial Intelligence Sound Monitoring Device programme to tackle the issue of illegal logging in Guyana.

Jamaica’s swim star Alia Atkinson on Sunday stamped her dominance on the 50 Short Course Meters (SCM) Breaststroke event in Tokyo winning another gold medal for her country at the FINA Swimming World Cup.

Recording a blistering 28.95 seconds she again finished ahead of the Russian Champion Yuliya Efimova (29.56) and the Australian Champion Emily Seebohm (29.99) and just off her own World Record of 28.56 seconds set in Budapest in October this year.

This NGO has a special focus on rural women’s economic development through improved market access, adaptive agricultural techniques, and capacity-building. Helen’s Daughters was formed in 2016 in a winning proposal for UN Women’s Empower Women Champions for Change Program.

The Bishops’ High School in Georgetown, Guyana, hosted its annual 9th Grade (3rd Form) CARICOM Project at the school on Friday, 13 April, 2018.

This year’s activity was observed under the theme, ‘Climate: Resilience and Mitigation – Safeguarding Our Physical and Cultural Integrity’

Two CARICOM Member States – Dominica, and Haiti – were featured this year. The other country featured was Puerto Rico.
