Towards a Global Biodiversity Framework under the Convention on Biological Diversity - A Synthesis Document

The Caribbean Hub of the European Union-funded project for Capacity-Building related to Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) in the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Countries, has announced that the winner of its Short Video Contest is aspiring scientist, Ms Lyn-Marie Lynton of Barbados.

Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat’s Human and Social Development chief, Dr Douglas Slater has drawn attention to the decline of land area for agricultural use and alarming levels of mangroves loss in the Region.

Assistant Secretary-General for Human and Social Development, Dr Douglas Slater has called for actions to foster more ecosystem-based solutions to address biodiversity loss, climate change and land degradation simultaneously.

As CARICOM joined the global Community in celebrating International Day for Biological Diversity on May 22^nd, Dr Slater reiterated the need for mainstreaming biodiversity in economic sectors; and working together at all levels to build a future in harmony with nature.

The publication provides key information given the relative lack of baseline data and related time-bound objectively quantifiable targets for the sub-region, and is of particular value given the dependence on natural resources for livelihoods and well-being, and thus exposure to disruption and environmental disasters, of communities in many SIDS and developing countries in the region.

A Review of Progress Towards the Aichi Biodiversity Targets

Regional environmental officers are attending a workshop to help them prepare for a major international conference on biodiversity, to be held in Mexico in December. The CARICOM ACP-MEAs project is hosting the regional workshop October 11-13 at the Grand Coastal Hotel in Guyana.

The fourth International Congress on Biodiversity of the Guiana Shield,  which has received funding from the Caribbean Community CARICOM through the ACP-MEAs project, got underway in Georgetown, Guyana, on Monday.  

The event is being held under the theme ‘Leveraging our High Endemicity, Cultural Diversity and intact Ecosystems for inclusive Growth and Secure Futures’.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has launched a US$12.5 million Caribbean Marine Biodiversity Programme (CMBP), in an effort to protect critical marine ecosystems and reduce threats to the region’s fisheries and tourism sectors.
