(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)  The need for the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to forge ahead with the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) in order to adequately and collectively respond to the current global financial and economic crisis was underscored yesterday at the official opening of the Twenty-Sixth Meeting of the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED),  Monday, at Le Meridien Pegasus Hotel.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Bureau of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has urged the Committee of Central Bank Governors (CCBG) to continue their planning for possible challenges to the Region’s financial and non-financial sectors in the continuing global economic and financial situation.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Prime Minister of Saint Lucia the Hon. Stephenson King has endorsed the developments undertaken by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat and the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC) in advancing the Region’s agenda on climate change through the development of a regional climate change strategy.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The inaugural meeting of the CARICOM Task Force on Climate Change and Development was held in Saint Lucia. The Task Force will facilitate and coordinate technical work, advise on policy directions on climate change, and provide support to CARICOM Member States in their preparations for key regional, hemispheric and other global forums and in their negotiations with international development partners.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The CARICOM Task Force on Climate Change and Development welcomes the views of President-elect Barack Obama for a cap and trade system approach to cutting greenhouse gas emissions and further supports the targets to reduce emissions to their 1990 levels by 2020 and another 80% by 2050.

The Region’s support for Mr. Obama’s proposals was indicated at the First Meeting of the Caribbean Task Force on Climate Change and Development held in Saint Lucia from 21-22 November 2008.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)   Chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Honourable Baldwin Spencer, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda will preside over the 24th Meeting of the Bureau of Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM to be held in St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda on Saturday 22 November 2009.
