(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The time "is opportune" for the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to engage the investment and trade partners of the United States, given the significant development and transformation of the Community, the Hon. Baldwin Spencer, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda told the breakfast launch of the New York Conference on the Caribbean on Thursday.
It is my pleasure to participate in this symposium on education and to share this panel with such distinguished speakers. This discussion could not be timelier. We in CARICOM Community are currently re-examining the scope and effectiveness of our overarching philosophy "education for all". In New York, it is clear that you are grappling with the reality of the principle of "no child left behind" especially its implications for poor black and Latino children, among whom I am sure are some descendants from the Caribbean.
(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)Â The University of the West Indies and the Medgar Evers College on Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to foster greater ties between the two tertiary institutions in specific areas of importance to the Caribbean and the Diaspora in New York.
(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Zonal Round Two of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Regional Quiz Competition 2008 comes to a close with Antigua and Barbuda and Trinidad and Tobago joining Saint Lucia and St Kitts and Nevis as the four contending teams moving on to the Semi-Finals.
(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Trinidad and Tobago will be hosting the second Zonal Round of the (Caribbean Community) CARICOM Regional Quiz Competition scheduled for 17-18 June 2008 at the National Library, St Vincent Street in Port-of-Spain.
Zonal Round Two will see Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago battling for the two remaining places in the Semi-Finals.
Two years ago, when I had the honour of addressing this august body for the second time, I committed the Caribbean to achieving universal access to HIV and AIDS prevention, treatment, care and support services by the year 2010. It was bold pronouncement on the part of the Caribbean considering the twin problems of a region with the second highest prevalence of HIV infection in the world and limited technical and financial resources that the Region had to surmount in order to achieve this milestone.
