CARICOM Secretariat receives publications on Regional Integration

(CARICOM Secretariat, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat today received eight new publications on regional integration from Ian Randle Publishers of Jamaica. The publications were received by Assistant Secretary-General for Human and Social Development, Dr. Edward Greene, who accepted on behalf of the CARICOM Secretary-General, H.E. Edwin Carrington.

It is an honour for me to represent the Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) at this the 2nd China-Caribbean Economic and Trade Cooperation Forum, following the very successful 1st forum which took place in Jamaica in February 2005. Regrettably, he was unable to be present at this Forum since he will be attending a meeting of our Heads of Government who will shortly be meeting in Trinidad and Tobago at a Special Summit to discuss health issues.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) In its continued fight against HIV and AIDS in the Caribbean, the CARICOM Secretariat has partnered with a Suriname-based Non-Governmental Organization, Stichting Projekta, and the World Bank to use alternative communication approaches such as edutainment strategies to raise the awareness on HIV and AIDS, reduce HIV/AIDS related stigma and discrimination and promote Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) through the use of the Visual and Performing Arts.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The African Diaspora Conference has made a strong call for more emphasis to be placed on African-centred education in the Caribbean Region, noting the need for regional universities to introduce more structured programmes of teaching and research in African Studies and for regional authorities to standardise and recognise certification and qualifications in such disciplines.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Prime Minister of Trinidad & Tobago, the Hon. Patrick Manning, will host a meeting of the Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) next week to launch a watershed regional campaign against chronic diseases.

The one-day summit, being organised by the CARICOM Secretariat in partnership with the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO/WHO), will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Port of Spain on Saturday September 15, beginning at 9.00 a.m.

The historic Summit is supported by the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) and the Americas Bureau of the World Health Organisation (WHO).

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Four international development agencies have started collaboration with the CARICOM Commission on Youth Development in data collection on youth related issues.

This is in support of the Commission’s mandate to assess the challenges and opportunities for youth in the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) and recommend a strategy to the Meeting of the Conference of CARICOM Heads of Government in July, 2008 on how to improve empower youth and their quality of life.
