(CARICOM Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana) The Eighth Ordinary Meeting of the Legal Affairs Committee (LAC) was held at the Krasnapolsky Hotel Paramaribo, Suriname on 11 February, 2005 under the chairmanship of H.E. Mr. Siegfried F. Gilds, Minister of Justice and Police of the Republic of Suriname. Representatives from eight Member States participated in the Meeting and Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago were represented at the level of Attorney-General.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana)   The February 03 ruling by the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council that the legislation enacted by Jamaica to establish the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) is unconstitutional, has the potential for profound adverse effects on the establishment of the CCJ and the effective implementation of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME). This will be the foremost topic for discussion when the Caribbean Community's (CARICOM) Legal Affairs Committee (LAC) meets in Suriname on 9 -11 February 2005.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana) The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat has today learnt of the ruling by the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council that the legislation, passed by the Jamaican Parliament to establish the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) in that country, is unconstitutional and void.

"There is as yet no indication that the Privy Council's ruling on Jamaica's legislation introducing the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) would delay the establishment of the Court by CARICOM Governments."   So said CARICOM Secretary-General when asked today about the ruling of the Privy Council.

He also informed that the Jamaican Government is studying the ruling with a view to determining its options.

CHILE RALLIES BEHIND PORT-OF-SPAIN, FRONT-RUNNER IN SECRETARIAT RACE
CHRIST CHURCH, BARBADOS - Port-of-Spain has formally secured the backing of Chile, in connection with CARICOM’s bid for the Permanent Secretariat of the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA).
Chile is the latest country to signal its endorsement of Port-of-Spain.  Recently, Port-of-Spain received the backing of Peru.
