It is with deep regret that I learnt of the death of the Rt. Hon. Sir Eric Matthew Gairy, KCMG, former Prime Minister of Grenada, last Saturday evening.
The late Sir Eric Gairy will long be remembered for the important role he played in raising the political consciousness of the Grenadian people and in instilling confidence in their capacity to effect change in the quality of their lives.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana) CARICOM Heads of Government have asked that an interim report on the most urgent matters affecting Legal Education in the Caribbean be submitted to them in time for consideration at their Ninth Interssesional Meeting in March 1998.
This Report will be compiled by a committee of experts to be appointed by CARICOM Chairman, the Prime Minister of Jamaica, the Rt. Hon. Percival Patterson. Mr Patterson is consulting with the appropriate individuals and organisations before naming the committee.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana) Six countries used the opportunity of the recently concluded XVIII Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community to sign agreements bolstering the Integration Movement.
The Bahamas and Montserrat signed Protocol I, the first in a series of amendments to the Treaty of Chaguaramas, which established the Caribbean Community and Common Market. With Montserrat's signature on July 4, 1997, the Protocol came into force provisionally.
(CARICOM Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana)Â CARICOM Secretary General Mr Edwin Carrington has alerted the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) that the Community will need support in the process of preparing Haiti for integration into CARICOM.
The Secretary General was speaking at the start of a week-long review by the CARICOM Secretariat and UNDP of a Technical Co-operation Programme. Mr Carrington told the three-member UNDP team led by Chief of the Caribbean Division Ms Gillian Lindsay-Nanton that the incorporation of Haiti was one of the priorities of the Community.

In a statement at the end of the XVIII Meeting of the Conference in Montego Bay, Jamaica, which ended recently, the leaders deplored any form of interference in the judicial process of Member States of the Community.
(CARICOM Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana)Â The Government and people of Montserrat will receive additional assistance from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) following a visit to the island by Prime Ministers the Hon. Dr. Keith Mitchell of Grenada and the Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas of St Kitts/Nevis.
The visit by the two leaders was initiated by the Chairman of CARICOM the Hon. Percival Patterson, Prime Minister of Jamaica at the XVIII Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community which ended in Montego Bay, Jamaica on July 4.
Last week Nutritionists and dieticians agreed that they need to change the way in which they operate, given the focussing of the Caribbean Health Sector on the need to ensure " Value for Money" and the adoption of the generic standards (ISO 9000), established by the International Standards Organisation (ISO).
 This took place at the Twenty-fifth Meeting of the Caribbean Association of Nutritionists and Dieticians (CANDI), held in Trinidad and Tobago from June 22-26, 1997.
