BRIDGETOWN, Barbados - The University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Yesterday, the institution launched their year-long activities under the theme “Path to Prosperity”.
Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Principal, recalled that the Campus came into being first as a College of Arts and Science in 1963 with a mere 118 students huddled together in a temporary structure at the Bridgetown Harbour.

CARACAS, Venezuela — A tempest in an ink pot has broken out over the signature of President Hugo Chávez, which suddenly appeared on a government decree this week despite his long absence from the country.
The case of the mysterious signature comes as Mr. Chávez remains out of public view since undergoing cancer surgery in Havana on Dec. 11. He is still in Cuba, officials say, undergoing what they call a delicate recovery, which left him too sick to be sworn in on Jan. 10.

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC-Prime Minister Kenny Anthony has expressed concern over the impact of the new visa information sharing agreement between Canada and the United States.
The agreement allows both countries to share information about third country nationals who apply for a visa or permit to travel to either the US or Canada.
The agreement which was signed last month follows a decision made by the Government of Canada in September last year to impose visa restrictions on St. Lucians.
HAMILTON, Bermuda, CMC - Finance Minister Bob Richards says the new One Bermuda Alliance (OBA) government will honour a pre-election pledge not to lay off any civil servants but “shared sacrifice” is necessary to tackle Bermuda’s soaring debt.
He said government finances were "every bit as bad as we had feared" before the OBA took power a month ago.
On Wednesday, Richards said the government would seek talks with public-sector unions with pay cuts and shorter working weeks among the options on the table.
