PHILIPSBURG - Leading Information and Communications Technology (ICT) experts from the region and across the world will be converging on the tiny Caribbean nation of St Maarten for an intensive week of technology meetings.

The Westin St. Maarten Dawn Beach Resort & Spa will be the venue for the 6th Annual Caribbean Internet Governance Forum being jointly hosted by the Government of St Maarten, the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) and the Geneva-based non-profit ISOC (Internet Society).

This week’s workshop is organised by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), which is trying to engage media workers in the attempt at “demystify the concepts of regional integration’’ and in spreading the positive messages and benefits of the CSME.

Kingston, Jamaica, July 20, 2010 – The Jamaica government is focusing on the rollout of a broadband backbone in the short-term to ensure adequate connectivity throughout the island.

Minister with Responsibility for Information, Telecommunications and Special Projects, Daryl Vaz, says the move is in keeping with the government’s Vision 2030 National Development Plan, which designates information and communications technology (ICT) as a priority area for development as a major industry and an enabler for all other sectors.

UNIVERSITY of the West Indies (UWI), St Augustine, campus Principal Clem Sankat, unveiled a US$70 laptop computer that might fulfil the Government’s promise of a laptop to each Secondary Entrance Assessment (SEA) exam pupil.


Sankat caused a stir as he unveiled the device measuring about six inches by five inches at the 50th Annual Honours and Awards Ceremony of the Association of Professional Engineers (APETT) at UWI on Saturday night (12 June).

BRADES, Montserrat -- More than 15 senior members of staff from various government departments in Montserrat began a two-day workshop on developing an E-Government strategy during last month.

The workshop comes on the heels of the successful ICT Roadshow which highlighted the necessity for the island to develop a national information communication technologies (ICT) strategy, which would stimulate the island’s economy and social development.

BRADES, Montserrat -- Daniel Joseph of Lavabits, a software development firm on Montserrat was one of the featured presenters at the Caribbean ICT Roadshow BVI, which began on Tortola on Sunday, 16 May.

Joseph is part of a trio of young nationals who began the company last December to develop software for the global market. Daniel and his brother Samuel, along with Manish Valechha launched the company to provide real world solutions to the marketplace and to show that it could be done from Montserrat.

The Jamaica leg of the road show was launched on Wednesday under the theme, 'Harnessing the power of innovation - the engine for ICT-enabled Caribbean Development'.
