(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), H.E. Edwin Carrington has extended deepest condolences to the wife, relatives, and Government of Jamaica, on the passing of the late outstanding athlete, Herbert Henry McKenley.
In a Tribute to Mr. McKenley, the Secretary-General said that his outstanding achievements seated him comfortably among the distinguished stalwarts of any era, nationally, regionally and globally.
Tomorrow, 8th December, together with the kindred peoples of the Caribbean, we celebrate Cuba-CARICOM Day.
This is the 35th anniversary of the joint decision by Barbados, the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, Jamaica and the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago, to establish diplomatic relations with Cuba, a brave gesture that defied the policy of isolation imposed by the United States on our country in the Latin American and Caribbean context.
It is my distinct honour to address the people of the Caribbean Community and of Cuba as we celebrate another CARICOM-Cuba day on this the 35th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Cuba and four CARICOM Member States, namely Barbados, Jamaica, Guyana Trinidad and Tobago. Since that historic day in 1972, the bonds of friendship and solidarity have deepened significantly to incorporate a high level of collaboration in the political, economic and social spheres.
We, the Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community, meeting in Georgetown, Guyana at the Twelfth Special Meeting of the Conference on Friday, 7 December 2007, with a view to finding solutions, at both the national and regional levels, to the critical issue of poverty and the rising cost of living, took note of the research which highlights a number of factors impacting this issue in the Caribbean Community.
