WASHINGTON, CMC – An International Monetary Fund (IMF) working paper says since growth in the current global economic environment is “virtually nonexistent,” significant fiscal consolidation is inevitable in the region.
The paper, dubbed “The Challenges of Fiscal Consolidation and Debt Reduction in the Caribbean,” examines debt dynamics in the Caribbean and discusses policy options for reducing the high debt levels.
Based on empirical studies of factors underlying global large debt reduction episodes, the paper says “important policy lessons” are drawn for the Caribbean.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and Mexico will join forces to help in the reconstruction of Haiti in the medium and long-term, particularly in the area of health and the provision of tents and shelters.
In a Declaration issued at the conclusion of the first Mexico-CARICOM Summit held in Mexico on 21 February, the Heads of State and Government of Mexico and CARICOM acknowledged the urgent need to contribute to the international cooperation efforts to reconstruct Haiti and to ensure its long-term development.

ST GEORGE'S, Grenada (GIS) -- India's High Commissioner-designate to Grenada, Malay Mishra, has pledged his country’s continued support to Grenada in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

“India attaches great importance to her relations with Grenada,” he explained. “Under India’s Economic and Technical Cooperation Programme (ITEC), India has continued to assist Grenada in its capacity building in the IT sector.”

For the second time in less than a week, it is a great pleasure for me as Secretary-General of CARIFORUM to be participating in a signing ceremony with a representative of the European Union.

Just last Saturday in Barbados, Ambassador Amos Tincani, the European Delegate to that Member State in he Region, and I signed a rider to an agreement which benefited the West Indies Rum and Spirits Producers Association (WIRSPA). That was a good agreement.

1. The Fifth UK-Caribbean Forum, hosted by the Government of Barbados, took place in Bridgetown on 26-28 April 2006. The Forum was co-chaired on the Caribbean side by the Hon. Elvin Nimrod, MP, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade of Grenada and current Chair of the CARICOM Council for Foreign and Community Relations, and on the UK side by the Rt. Hon. Jack Straw, MP, Secretary of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
