Cuba will be the focus of four days of activity in Guyana beginning November 18.

The CARICOM/Cuba Joint Commission will hold its Fifth Meeting on November 18-19 and immediately following, Guyana will be host for a two-day Caribbean/Cuba Trade and Investment Symposium on November 20-21. The symposium is being held with the assistance of the CARICOM Secretariat and the Caribbean Export Development Agency (CEDA).

The Government of The Bahamas has assured the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) that all necessary precautions are in place in the event of a hurricane attacking the country which is hosting the first and second legs of the Caribbean Youth Explosion on the islands of Eleuthera and New Providence.

The 96 delegates are at present housed in Camp Symonette, the designated hurricane shelter on Eleuthera, as they participate in the Commonwealth Youth Programme's Caribbean Youth Exchange which began on Friday September 18.

The Caribbean Youth Explosion will be launched in Nassau, The Bahamas on Friday,18 September 1998 with a ceremony at the Nassau Marriott Hotel.

This unique event will involve more than 100 young people between the ages of 13 and 30 from Member States of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Commonwealth Caribbean including Canada. With the theme "Making Choices, Taking Action", the Explosion brings together the youth in a series of activities organised by the Commonwealth Youth Programme (CYP), the CARICOM Secretariat and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

The Government of Montserrat is taking steps to regularise employment opportunities for CARICOM nationals in that country. The following outlines the procedures to be followed by suitably qualified CARICOM nationals seeking employment in Montserrat.

In recent times, nationals of several overseas countries arriving in Montserrat to access employment opportunities, have been refused entry because they do not fulfil entry requirements.

Chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Saint Lucia's Prime Minister Dr the Hon. Kenny D Anthony is scheduled to arrive in Guyana on Sunday, September 13 for a one-day visit.

The purpose of Dr Anthony's visit is to met with the parties who are signatories to the Herdmanston Accord and the Saint Lucia Statement, the two CARICOM-brokered documents which set out the way forward for Guyana following post-December 15 general election unrest.

The Caribbean Community is relieved at the decision on the part of the people of Nevis to remain in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis. This has ensured the continued integrity of the State. It has also provided what could be the last chance for all with the interests of the people of St. Kitts and Nevis at heart to work together to eliminate the root causes of the problems plaguing relations between the two islands comprising that State.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana) The people of Nevis, a part of the Federation of St.Kitts/Nevis, have a right to self-determination, but the Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Mr. Edwin Carrington says they should at least have the maximum information on the pros and cons of secession before voting in a referendum on 10 August, 1998.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana)  The Caribbean Community heard with surprise and disappointment the recent announcement by the Premier of Nevis, that the Nevis Administration would be proceeding with the holding of a referendum on 10 August 1998, with a view to seceding from the State of St. Kitts and Nevis. The Community views this development with grave concern.
