Heads of Government of CARICOM and CANADA, at their Sixth Summit Meeting in Montego Bay, Jamaica on January 19, 2001, were briefed by the Government of Guyana on the controversy between Guyana and Venezuela.

The Heads of Government noted that the Government of Venezuela continued to make claims to Guyana's territory.

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) continues to benefit from collaborative efforts with the Government of Mexico through that country's Maritime Education Trust Fund (FIDENA). For this year, one CARICOM student is about to graduate from the institution which has been ratified by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) as reputable, while another has begun studies.

Trade Relations between the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Dominican Republic entered a new era on 28 April 2000, when the Foreign Minister of the Dominican Republic, Hon. Eduardo Latorre and the Secretary-General of CARICOM, Mr. Edwin W. Carrington, signed in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, the Protocol to Implement the Agreement Establishing the Free Trade Area between CARICOM and the Dominican Republic.
