PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti, CMC - Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labour, Michael Posner, arrive(d) here on Monday at the start of a three-day visit to the earthquake battered French-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country. A US Department of State statement said Posner will meet with senior Haitian government officials including the Minister Delegate for Human Rights and the Fight against Extreme Poverty, the Ombudswoman of the Office of Citizen Protection, the Secretary of State for Disabilities, and the Director General of the Haitian National Police.

PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti, CMC – A new United Nations-backed national household survey shows substantial progress has been made for children in the education, nutrition, health and sanitation sectors since 2006.
According to the initial results of the Haiti Demographic and Health Survey (DHS), which covered 13,350 households, 77 per cent of children aged 6-11 years attended primary school in 2012, compared to just below 50 per cent in 2005-2006 when the last survey was conducted.

After four months at the Antigua & Barbuda Hotel Training Institute, the four Haitian students say they have passed all their subjects with flying colours. Associate degree student Nicholas Louis Le Jeune says not only are they making good grades, but they also made friends and overcame the language barrier.

Clarke has renewed calls for heightened action to help the improved, French-speaking Caribbean country recover quickly. “Despite the many years that have since passed, the people of Haiti are still struggling to rebuild their infrastructure,” Clarke, the daughter of Jamaican immigrants, who represents the 9th Congressional District in Brooklyn, New York, told the Caribbean Media Corporation.
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti -- President Michel Martelly urged Haitians to recall the tens of thousands of people who lost their lives in a devastating earthquake three years ago, marking the disaster's anniversary Saturday with a simple ceremony. Former U.S. president Bill Clinton joined Martelly later in the day for a similarly quiet wreath-laying commemoration.
Evidence of loss remains even three years after a massive earthquake claimed the lives of as many as 200,000 people in Haiti. In the middle of Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince, there is a cathedral whose sun-washed walls reach into the sky where a roof used to be. A lone flagpole marks the spot where the National Palace, a symbol of Haiti's government, once proudly stood. And on a downtown street that once bustled with storefronts, there is now a row of vendors who sell their wares under tent poles and umbrellas.
Cholera could be contained in Haiti by vaccinating less than half the population, University of Florida researchers suggest in a paper published in the journal Scientific Reports. The work places UF's Emerging Pathogens Institute in the pro-vaccination camp in an ongoing international debate over how best to contain the two-year-old epidemic that has claimed thousands of lives. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been skeptical about the effectiveness of vaccination against cholera in this setting.
Just in time for the third anniversary of Haiti’s earthquake on Jan. 12, 2010, Canada’s principal foreign aid minister, Julian Fantino, delivered a wake-up call to that country’s government by declaring that he was placing future foreign aid to Haiti “on ice” because he was not satisfied with its progress toward recovery. Given that Haiti would collapse without foreign assistance, his comments got the immediate attention of the government and Haiti’s international partners.
PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti, CMC – The head of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) Hervé Ladsous has arrived here ahead of the third anniversary of the devastating earthquake that killed more than 300,000 people in the French Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country on January 12, 2012. The United Nations said that Ladsous, who has already met with Haitian President Michel Martelly is also scheduled to meet with a number of government officials. He will also meet with officials and staff from the UN Peacekeeping Force (MINUSTAH) before his return to the United States this weekend.
