? KINGSTON, Jamaica - The World Trade Organisation (WTO) is now set to appoint a new director general. He is Roberto Carvalho de Azevêdo, Brazil's long-serving ambassador to the organisation. His appointment is good news for developing countries insofar as Carvalho de Azevêdo is from a leading developing country that has shown itself not to be averse to taking on the countries that have dominated the WTO. Those countries are the United States and the collective 27-nation European Union.

Geneva, Switzerland - BRAZIL'S Roberto Azevedo will take the helm of the World Trade Organization, diplomats said yesterday, confirming the Latin American giant's new status as a global power. Azevedo, currently Brazil's ambassador to the 159-nation WTO, narrowly pipped the former Mexican trade chief and heavyweight negotiator Herminio Blanco in a final round, sources familiar with the closed-door contest said, after seven other candidates stumbled earlier in the race.

PROVIDENCIALES, Turks and Caicos, CMC – A Brazilian court has ordered the re-arrest of former Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) premier Michael Misick.
The spokesman for the Governor’s Office, Neil Smith said that the Brazilian Justice Minister issued his decision to refuse Misick's appeal against a decision not to grant him political asylum.
The decision was published in the Brazilian Official Gazette on Tuesday.

SAO PAULO, (Reuters) – President Dilma Rousseff will make the first formal state visit by a Brazilian leader to the United States in nearly two decades, a diplomatic breakthrough for an emerging power that has clashed with Washington but is hungry for closer ties and recognition of its growing prestige.
The trip will occur later this year, likely in October, officials told Reuters on condition of anonymity because the White House has not yet announced the visit. A White House spokeswoman declined comment.

SAO PAULO, (Reuters) – The U.S. government is shipping emergency medical supplies to Brazil to treat survivors of a deadly nightclub fire who are suffering from exposure to cyanide gas released in the blaze, the Brazilian health ministry said yesterday. Officials say 119 people remain hospitalized after Sunday’s fire at the Kiss nightclub in southern Brazil that killed 236. Brazilian doctors have said cyanide was among the toxic chemicals produced when fire consumed the soundproofing foam on the club’s ceiling, contributing to the high number of fatalities.

SAO PAULO -- A top Brazilian newspaper is reporting that popular former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will be investigated for allegations that he knew about a massive cash-for-votes scheme, the nation's biggest corruption scandal.
The Estado de S. Paulo newspaper reports Wednesday that the attorney general has ordered the formal investigation. It cited no sources.
Before hours call to the attorney general's office weren't answered.
