As Chairman of the Caribbean Community, it is my most pleasant task to welcome you all this evening to this very special occasion, the Launch of the CARICOM 30th Anniversary Programme.

CARICOM Secretary General, Mr Edwin Carrington, met with CARICOM Chairman, Dominican Prime Minister, Honourable Pierre Charles, in the Cabinet Room in Roseau, Dominica earlier today. The Dominican Leader holds the chairmanship of the fifteen-member grouping for the next six months.

The next intercessional meeting of the Community is tentatively set for Trinidad and Tobago, from February 14-15, 2003. According to the Secretary General, a number of critical areas are expected to explored in detail at that meeting. These include_

Chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) His Excellency Bharrat Jagdeo, the President of Guyana, is planning to lead a mission to Haiti, the Community's newest Member State, in early December.

The Mission will include representatives of both Government and Private Sector as a means of familiarising key Community stakeholders with Haiti. Heads of Government at their Meeting last July in Georgetown agreed that the Chairman should visit Haiti to mark its accession to the Community which was formalised during the July meeting.

Salutations.

Let me begin by first extending, on behalf of the Government and people of the Commonwealth of Dominica, a happy and prosperous 2001 to all my colleague Ministers, the Secretary-General, officials, and staff of the CARICOM Secretariat. It is our hope that the year 2001 will be for you and for all of us in CARICOM, a year of greater accomplishments and the fulfilment of hopes and dreams.
