(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Director of Human and Social Development in the CARICOM Secretariat, Myrna Bernard is advocating for formal education on Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

In a presentation to the two-day meeting of the Bureau of Women’s/Gender Affairs in Georgetown, Guyana on Wednesday, Ms Bernard told gender directors and coordinators that they should consider more seriously the introduction of GBV in the Health and Family Life Education curriculum, a curriculum which was intended to address violence in the schools context.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Second Meeting of the Regional Task Force on Cultural Industries opened today, Monday 1 June, in Suriname, with the pressing issue of the future of Caribbean Cultural Industries high on the agenda.

The meeting observed and noted that for the Caribbean Cultural Industries to bloom successfully, artists, governments and institutions needed to play their respective roles.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Ministers of Health and Education will be involved in two meetings in Montego Bay, Jamaica next week.

First they will convene the Eighteenth Meeting of the CARICOM Council for Human and Social Development (COHSOD) and then will meet with their Latin American counterparts to in preparation for a meeting of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

It is my pleasure to participate in this symposium on education and to share this panel with such distinguished speakers. This discussion could not be timelier. We in CARICOM Community are currently re-examining the scope and effectiveness of our overarching philosophy "education for all". In New York, it is clear that you are grappling with the reality of the principle of "no child left behind" especially its implications for poor black and Latino children, among whom I am sure are some descendants from the Caribbean.
