Regional Public Goods for Sustainable Health Development

The Caribbean Cooperation in Health (CCH) advances the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) objective of enhanced functional cooperation found in Article 6 of the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas, with the aim to achieve more efficient operation of common services and activities; to promote greater understanding among its peoples and the advancement of their social, cultural and technological development; and to intensify joint activities in areas such as health, education, transportation, and telecommunications.

The Air Transport Sector in the CARICOM Region is close to reaching a tipping point. Some domiciled carriers that have made significant contributions to the socio-economic welfare of the economies they have served over the years, are going through a period of uncertainty. The airlines continue to make losses, with shareholder governments concerned about having to prop them up indefinitely.

Parliamentarians from across the Caribbean met in Jamaica November 9-10, 2011 for a Regional Consultation of Parliamentarians on Preventing Gender-based Violence under the theme “Building Political Will to End Gender-Based Violence.” The objectives of the meeting were to increase awareness of gender based violence and violence against women among parliamentarians and to build political will among them to take actions to end this violation of human rights.

It is often pointed out that the groups most vulnerable to HIV infection are men who have sex with men, sex workers and injecting drug users and that, as the epidemic spreads, females are more vulnerable than males. It is less often pointed out that large proportions of people in all of those categories are young and that more than half of the people newly infected with HIV each year are under the age of 25 (UNAIDS, 2006a; UNAIDS Inter-agency Task Team on Young People, 2006).

Agriculture in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is an important economic activity for food production and livelihoods in rural and urban households. Recently the sector increasingly relies on the international market for raw materials, intermediate inputs and final consumer food products.
