Prime Minister of The Bahamas, the Hon Perry Christie will lead the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) delegation to the bicentennial celebrations of the Republic of Haiti.

The two-day official celebrations begin on 1 January 2004 to commemorate the founding of the Haitian republic in 1804 by ex-slaves. Also included in the delegation is the Minister of Foreign Affairs of The Bahamas, the Hon Fred Mitchell and CARICOM Deputy Secretary-General, Ambassador Lolita Applewhaite.

CHRIST CHURCH, BARBADOS – The G-20 – which was formed ahead of and rose to prominence at the ill-fated Fifth World Trade Organization (WTO) Ministerial Conference, this past September - met in Brasilia, Brazil, December 11 to 12. The meeting was convened ahead of a high-level WTO General Council meeting, set for December 15. The meeting took place at Ministerial level. It was intended as an interchange and coordinative session focused on how to advance multilateral agricultural negotiations and, allied to this, attaining progress in the stalled Doha Round.

Representatives of CARICOM Member States, currently in Geneva, Switzerland to participate in the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), December 10-12, 2003, met today at the Mission of Barbados to Geneva to discuss, as a group, issues pertinent to the Meeting and to agree on common CARICOM positions. The Meeting, which was convened by the CARICOM Deputy Secretary General, Ambassador Lolita Applewhaite, was chaired by the Barbados’ Minister of Commerce, Industry and Business Development, Senator Hon. Lynette Eastmond.

It is with great pleasure that today, 8 December, we celebrate CARICOM-Cuba Day.

Thirty-one years ago, four Caribbean Community countries - Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago - opened this chapter in the Community’s history by establishing diplomatic relations with Cuba.

CARICOM Heads of Government, in Abuja, Nigeria attending the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, on Sunday morning participated in a meeting of a different kind. They gathered together at a special breakfast session to bid farewell to one of the hemisphere’s outstanding leaders – outgoing Prime Minister of Canada, Rt. Hon. Jean Chrétien. CARICOM Heads of Government/Delegation in attendance were_ the Prime Ministers of The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Jamaica, St Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia and Trinidad and Tobago and the President of Guyana.
