SALUTATIONS!

I have always felt particular pleasure in participating in any activity that involves our young people and today is no exception. The age range makes it all the more pleasing as the competitions’ age range encompasses youngsters from eight to sixteen ensuring participation from both the primary and secondary schools in the Community.

Ladies and gentlemen, I am happy to be here with you at the Mona Campus of the UWI on an occasion that reflects the continuous march of our collective Caribbean people to secure our rightful place in this global village.

A Region-wide art competition opened to schools across CARICOM closed on Monday January 26, 2004.

Coordinated by the CARICOM Secretariat Directorate of Human and Social Development under the direct supervision of the coordinator of the 30th Anniversary Progamme, Ms. Marilyne Trotz, the competition is part of CARICOM’s ongoing programme commemorating the thirtieth anniversary of its establishment.

THE CUBAN INTEGRATED MODEL OF SPORT DEVELOPMENT – LESSONS FOR THE CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY

The genesis of Cuba’s national sports movement is attributed to the first Presidential declaration after the 1959 revolution to the effect that PE and Sport were the vehicles by which individual health, social well-being, intellectual development and the shaping of high performance athletes would be achieved, and by extension national development.

Members of the Caribbean Community’s (CARICOM) Budget Committee presently meeting in Guyana used the opportunity to take a guided tour of the new headquarters building of the CARICOM Secretariat.

The tour was conducted by an Engineer of the city of Georgetown, Mr. Michael Sears and accompanying members of the Budget Committee was CARICOM Secretary-General Mr. Edwin Carrington.

The building is located at Liliendaal on the East Coast of Demerara, Guyana.

During the visit of the CARICOM Fact-Finding Mission to Haiti on 5-7 January 2004, political opposition and civil society leaders expressed interest in meeting with CARICOM Heads of State and Government, in order to express their views directly to the CARICOM leadership. To this end, a meeting is scheduled to take place in Nassau, The Bahamas, on 20-21 January 2004 between several Heads of Government of CARICOM and representatives of the political opposition, civil society and the religious sector.
