BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Barbadians go to the polls on February 21 to elect a new government ended months of speculation as to when Prime Minister Freundel Stuart would seek a new five year term in office. A Barbados Government Information Service (BGIS) statement said that Stuart, who took over the leadership of the ruling Democratic Labour Party (DLP) after the death of prime minister David Thompson in October 2010, had met with Governor General Sir Elliott Belgrave on Tuesday to advise of the date.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados - The latest of studies commissioned by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) have underscored the serious negative impact that crime and violence are having on economies of the Caribbean at a time when economic growth with job-creation continues to be elusive for  a number of CARICOM states.
Not just the IDB, but also the World Bank and our own Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) have been pointing to the challenges facing this region.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados - BARBADOS will be embarking on a $450 million project to breathe fresh life into the country’s ailing sugar industry. The project was outlined yesterday by Agriculture Minister, Dr. David Estwick, prior to a meeting with industry officials and representatives of two companies which are likely to play key roles in the reconfigured sugar industry. Over the years, the sugar industry has experienced declining output, high production costs and reduced earnings from the European Union, which is Barbados’ main export market for the sweetener.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados - The Government of Barbados expressed its gratitude to Canada for implementing the Caribbean Leadership Project.
The first part of that project, the Leadership Development Programme, was launched yesterday at the Cave Hill School of Business.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs, Martin Cox, took the opportunity to convey this Government’s appreciation to Canada for supporting the seven-year, twenty million dollar Canadian funded initiative.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados - A debt of approximately $200 million owed by the Barbados Government to the University of the West Indies – most of it to the Cave Hill campus – has started to have a negative impact and ripple effect on several operators within the business community.
DAILY NATION investigations have revealed that the Barbados-based campus which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year appears to be struggling to pay its creditors and has racked up millions of dollars in unpaid bills.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados - exual violence against women is being seen as widespread in parts of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Alessandra Guedes, Regional Advisor on Intra-Family Violence at PAHO has indicated that a recent report titled “Violence against Women in Latin America and the Caribbean” showed that unfortunately violence against women is widespread in the 12 countries that they studied which included; Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Jamaica.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados - BARBADOS will be the first country in this region to carry out a study on its population’s salt intake.
According to Senior Health Officer, Dr. Kenneth George, the study – being carried out under the leadership of the Ministry of Health and the National Chronic Non-Communicable Disease Commission – is trying to estimate the quantity of salt in the average Barbadian diet.
George made this announcement during a press conference to launch new advertisements promoting healthy lifestyles on Wednesday afternoon.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados - ON SUNDAY, United States President Barack Obama was sworn in for his second term in office. He will have to shoulder the power and burden of the presidency in an increasingly turbulent world darkened by domestic discord and crises abroad. Obama has already said that he would root his second term in the crusade to build a more equitable economy which powered his triumph over Republican Mitt Romney but he is destined to face stiff resistance.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Prime Minister Freundel Stuart has hinted that he is likely to name the date for the next general elections within a few weeks time.
But he says he will only announce the date after he meets with the Governor General Elliott Belgrave.
“Let there be no mistake that the (opposition) Barbados Labour Party has been calling for an election, and that election is coming. I am not going to tell them when it is before I tell the Governor General, he has to know first.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados - TODAY WE REFLECT on the life and times of the Right Excellent Errol Walton Barrow, one of this island’s most important and influential leaders of the last century. Now a National Hero, Barrow will be remembered for many things – as Premier and Prime Minister and the man who led much of the social engineering that transformed this island-state. It is fortuitous that today, in the United States, the life and times of another great man of the 20th century, Dr Martin Luther King Jr, is also being celebrated. These two men stood for justice and equality.
