Trinidad and Tobago's Minister of Trade and Tourism, the Hon Mervyn Assam will deliver the feature address at the opening of the CARICOM Secretariat Southern African Trade and Investment Seminar at the Trinidad Hilton on Thursday November 20.

The seminar is part of the preparation for a CARICOM Trade and Investment Mission to Southern Africa, which is expected to take place next January. The Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community agreed that CARICOM should mount a mission to South Africa to explore opportunities in the areas of Trade, and Economic and Financial services.

The Secretaries General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) have signed a Co-operation Agreement which now formalises the already close cooperation between the two organisations.

The point was underscored by the Secretaries General of CARICOM and the ACS, Mr Edwin Carrington and Dr. Simon Molina Duarte respectively at the signing ceremony which took place at the Head quarters of the CARICOM Secretariat in Georgetown, Guyana on November 13, 1997.

The Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Mr Edwin Carrington, and his counterpart at the Association of Caribbean States (ACS), Mr Simon Molina Duarte, will sign a cooperation agreement on Thursday 13 November at the CARICOM Headquarters in Georgetown.

Partnership should be one of the fundamental approaches in the post Lome IV arrangements between the African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group of countries and the European Union (EU).

This concept was put forward by the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, the Hon. Mr Basdeo Panday as he spoke on behalf of the Caribbean at the opening session of the first ever Summit of the ACP countries in Libreville, Gabon on Thursday.

Preparations for a Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Ministerial Mission to Southern Africa will take a step forward with the convening of a seminar on Thursday November 20, 1997 at the Trinidad Hilton Hotel.

The seminar, organised by the CARICOM Secretariat and Kairi Consultants Ltd, will provide information on opportunities in Southern Africa for Caribbean business. Participants will be drawn from the business community and Ministers of Trade of CARICOM Member States.

CARIFORUM Member States have unanimously supported aimed at expanding and upgrading Melville Hall Airport , Dominica.
 
Foreign Ministers of CARIFORUM meeting in Georgetown, Guyana at the Seventh Ministerial Meeting gave their support for the project as a priority under the Eighth EDF supplied by the European Union.
 
In expressing its pleasure at the action by the Ministers, the Dominica delegation explained that their country did not have an airport capable of accommodating night landings even of small LIAT aircraft.

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you all to this meeting of the Caribbean Forum of States with the Commission of the European Union.

The Regional Resource Team (RRT) for Assistance to Montserrat will hold its second meeting on Saturday September 13 in Bridgetown, Barbados.

The RRT, established by the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community at its Eighth Inter-Sessional Meeting in St John's Antigua and Barbuda last February, has been mandated to expedite the development and implementation of projects designed to mitigate the effects of the volcanic crisis in Montserrat.

The Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED-Trade), will hold its inaugural meeting in Georgetown, Guyana on September 11, 1997. This Council came into being with the coming into force of Protocol I and replaces the longstanding Common Market Council.

During this week's Meeting, Ministers responsible for Trade will review the implementation of the provisions of Protocol I and the status of Protocol II, and will discuss the programme for completion of the remaining Protocols, and the finalisation of the process for revising the Treaty of Chaguaramas.
