Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque has made a call for fairness in international financing for Small Island Developing States (SIDs), noting that they have been experiencing a battering from climate impacts, not of their own making.

“We have had to face the sharp end of climate change impacts in conjunction with our other inherent vulnerabilities.  It is, therefore, crucial that vulnerability be the main criterion in determining access to concessional financing, which we urgently need in our quest for resilience.”

Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Ambassador Irwin LaRocque has hailed the signing of an MOU between CARICOM and FIFA as opening avenues to positively impact the lives of youth within the Region.

Ambassador LaRocque and FIFA’s President Mr Gianni Infantino signed the memorandum in a virtual ceremony, Monday. It creates a framework for further collaboration between football’s world government body and CARICOM on the development of football in the Community’s Member States.

The Fifth Conference of Heads of Government of Commonwealth Caribbean Countries opened this morning in the Ballroom of the Trinidad Hilton Hotel, Port-of-Spain, Trinidad.

His Excellency, Sir Solomon Hochoy, Governor General of Trinidad and Tobago officially opened the Conference.

Dr. The Right Honourable Eric E. Williams, P.C., Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, welcomed the delegates.

The Conference adopted a resolution to the effect that -

(a) Free Trade should be introduced with respect to all intra-Commonwealth Caribbean trade by 1st May, 1968, subject to certain other provisions;

Today the Conference of Commonwealth Caribbean Countries discussed and agreed on joint action on a wide range of subjects which affect the economic development of the participating countries. Subjects discussed include Economic Aid from Canada and a scheme for Mutual Technical Aid between Commonwealth Caribbean Countries and other Commonwealth countries. The Conference expressed concern over the Corporation tax on British industry recently proposed by the U.K. Government and put on record strong views that arrangements should be made to ensure that the investment of the U.K.

The Second Conference of Heads of Government of Commonwealth Caribbean Countries took place at Headquarters House, Kingston, Jamaica, from January 13 to 17, 1964, under the Chairmanship of the Hon. Donald Sangster, Deputy Prime Minister of Jamaica and Minister of Finance. The First Conference was held in Trinidad from July 22 to 25, 1963, at the National Museum and Art Gallery, Port-of-Spain, under the Chairmanship of the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago.
