(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Caribbean Community is among organizations represented on the Board of the Interim Haiti Reconstruction Commission that will oversee the money pledged for Haitiβs reconstruction.
The IHRC, which has an 18-month mandate, will be co-chaired by the Hon Jean-Max Bellerive, Prime Minister of Haiti and Mr. Bill Clinton, former US President and current United Nations envoy to Haiti.
The private sector, civil society and major donors will also be on the Board.
I was deeply shocked and saddened at the extent of the destruction caused by the catastrophic earthquake which devastated our sister nation of Haiti yesterday. The haunting images of bodies, injured persons and ruined buildings struck a chord of compassion throughout our nation for the people of Haiti.
Haiti as the poorest country in the western hemisphere is now severely challenged to cope with this tragedy. Haiti needs all countries, including the small developing countries to come to its aid urgently.
(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) βThe Haiti of the future must be completely different and significantly different from the Haiti of the recent past,β the Most Honourable Percival J. Patterson said at the International Donors Conference on Haiti, Wednesday, 31 March 2010.
The Conference was held at the United Nations headquarters in New York, to mobilise support for the development needs of Haiti towards its sustained reconstruction and recovery.
