It is with a sense of profound loss and deep personal sadness that I have received the news of the passing of one of the Caribbean’s greatest sons, Lloyd Algernon Best, OCC.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) I have the distinct honour and pleasure of addressing the Caribbean Community on the historic occasion of the Bicentenary of the passage of the Bill by the British Parliament in 1807, that abolished the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.
Given the overwhelming significance of this historic moment to us in the Caribbean, it is fitting that we pause for a moment to commemorate and to remember. We must never forget.

This is an important event for the youth of the Caribbean and indeed for the CARICOM Community. This evening we are actually here to launch the activities of the CARICOM Commission on Youth Development, which was mandated by the Conference of Heads of Government in July 2006. It is my pleasure as the Lead Head for Youth Affairs, Gender, Culture and Sport to welcome you all to the Republic of Suriname.

First of all, I would like to thank the President of the Republic of Suriname, H.E Runaldo Venetiaan who holds lead responsibility for Culture, Youth, Gender and Sport within the CARICOM Community, not only for his presence at this function this evening, but also for the continuing interest that he has shown and the leadership he has given in matters related to the strengthening of the Community and in this case the well-being of the youth in Suriname and the region as a whole.
