PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago, Guardian - While the University of the West Indies, St Augustine, has recorded significant increases in enrolment, the graduation rate for research degrees continues to be disappointing. Making the comment yesterday was Errol Simms, dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, at the opening of yesterday’s conference on Understanding the Caribbean through the Lens of Research and Practice held at UWI.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC- Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar is to pay an official visit to Canada later this month, according to a statement issued by the Office of the Prime Minister.

It said the April 23-26 visit is in response to an invitation from the Prime Minister Stephen Harper and follows the State visit of Canada’s Governor General David Johnston and his wife to Trinidad and Tobago during the 50thanniversary of independence 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC - Identical twin sisters, Louise Pierre and Louisa Danzel, from the fishing village of Blanchisseuse celebrated their 100th birthday on Wednesday. The twins also celebrated the birthday of their neighbour Richard Morgan, who will turn 101 on May 25.

All three were honoured by Member of Parliament for Arima, Rodger Samuel, and Minister of State in the Ministry of the People and Social Development and Department of Ageing, Vernella Toppin, in a ceremony which was attended by various Ministry officials, friends and family of the centenarians.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago, Guardian - The sudden death of a few fish and 150 or so corbeaux may not seem to be particularly alarming—especially the latter, as they are considered by many to have only nuisance value and are not blessed with the aesthetics of other birds. This may be one reason why the response of the authorities to date suggests they may not be treating the incidents sufficiently seriously.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Advocate - The Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) will give its ruling in the matter of Shanique Myrie against the Government of Barbados at a later date, which is yet to be announced.

The matter came to a close yesterday at the CCJ’s Headquarters in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, with President of the CCJ Dennis Byron adjourning the matter so the seven-judge panel can deliberate on the evidence provided in the case.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar Monday described the death of Britain’s former head of government, Margaret Thatcher as “ a profound sense of loss”. “The United Kingdom and indeed the world, has lost a woman who, throughout her life, has been a valuable contributor to local and global efforts to improve the well-being of those whom she served” she said in a statement. Thatcher, who was 87, had been in declining health for some years, suffering from dementia. She died peacefully following a stroke.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC - The Environmental Management Authority (EMA) says it is unable to identify any environmental reasons why more than 100 black vultures (Coragyps atratus) died in West Trinidad on Monday. The EMA said it is also working on the theory that the birds may have been feeding on the carcass of an animal which had been poisoned. “We can’t identify an environmental cause as such that they were exposed to. There were 150 birds, we estimated. There was nothing else in the vicinity.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad -The Government of Barbados has been accused of being involved in a "huge cover-up" after local authorities trampled on the rights of Jamaican woman Shanique Myrie. The claim was made yesterday before the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) by the lawyer representing Myrie in her discrimination case against Barbados.
