PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad- Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar yesterday explored the possibility of holding a CARICOM-US summit in T&T, according to a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister. Persad-Bissessar did so in Washington yesterday when she met with US Deputy Secretary of State William Burns to discuss ongoing bilateral issues. She is in the US attending an OAS Americas-Africa business forum which she will address this morning.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad- Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar yesterday met with United States Deputy Secretary of State William Burns to discuss ongoing bilateral issues.
According to a release from the Prime Minister’s office, the PM and Burns addressed several important matters affecting Trinidad and Tobago and the region, among them the US Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA), which was enacted by Congress in 2010 and is part of the US effort to combat tax evasion by US citizens holding overseas investments.

Alix Yule will direct the six year CIDA funded Local Economic Development (LED) project within 14 Caribbean countries.  She will first be based at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) headquarters in Ottawa, Canada.

The T&T delegation includes senior officials of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Investment; the Customs and Excise Division of the Ministry of Finance and the Economy, Solicitor General Department, Ministry of Food Production, exporTT, Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturers Association and Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC –Aviation officials from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and South America will meet here in May to discuss initiatives aimed at developing air links between the regions, Trinidad and Tobago’s Foreign Minister Winston Dookeran has said.
Addressing the opening of the 14th annual Caribbean Conference on Sustainable Tourism Development (STC-14) here on Monday night, Dookeran, said the meeting would seek to consolidate some of the measures proposed in the San Juan Accord for the regional air transport sector that had been agreed upon five years ago.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - The Court of Appeal yesterday granted a stay stopping the decision of a High Court judgment which ordered that almost 250 Clico policyholders be repaid their full investments in the failed insurance giant. The stay was granted by Appeal Court judge Alice Yorke Soo Hon during a chamber court hearing at the Hall of Justice, Port-of-Spain. Soo Hon decided to grant the stay after she heard the State’s submissions on the merits of the appeal.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – A senior international tourism official has warned that increased taxes on air transportation and tourism will damage economies and reduce travel to destinations such as the Caribbean.
Addressing the 24th annual Caribbean Conference on Sustainable Tourism Development (STC-14) here on Monday night, Carlos Vogeler, the regional director for the Americas within the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), said taxes on tourism are an all too common occurrence.
