(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The third leg of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) National Consultations on Gangs and Gang violence project opened in St Kitts and Nevis on Monday with a call from that country’s Minister of Social Development Culture and Gender Affairs Honourable Marcella Liburd for ā€œtraditional shapers of society ā€œto reassert their role in order to mitigate the culture of youth gangs and violence which has pervaded the society.

CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Haiti’s CARICOM Youth Ambassador, Leticia Cadet, on Thursday, made an impassioned plea to the Caribbean Community to help re-build, as a matter of priority, the education system in Haiti.
At a special meeting of the Council for Human and Social Development (COHSOD) in Paramaribo, Suriname, Ms Cadet recalled with obvious grief the devastation caused by the earthquake, which crippled Port-au-Prince on 12 January, leaving in its wake a climbing death toll of more than 200, 000.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Haiti’s youth representatives attending the Regional Youth Forum in Paramaribo, Suriname, on Wednesday, were lauded for their ā€œgrim determination and resilienceā€ by speakers at the opening ceremony of the Forum, which is funded by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB).

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) At its third meeting held in Haiti on 8-10 December, the CARICOM Commission on Youth Development (CCYD) noted the findings of qualitative research conducted among youth in several critical areas including youth governance structures.

An analysis of those findings revealed that the Community has put effective good governance structures in place for youth participation in decision-making processes at both the national and regional levels and that the structures allowed for capacity building in leadership.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) At least two CARICOM Youth Ambassadors (CYAs) have ensured that the voices of youth resounded on the issue of Sexual Health and Reproduction, through their participation in a panel discussion held Tuesday 11 July in Saint Lucia, in observance of World Population Day.

The exercise was staged by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and involved more than 30 CYAs, as well as local and regional officials. It was moderated by Dominica’s CARICOM Youth Ambassador, Fenella Wenham.
