CHRIST CHURCH, BARBADOS – A ‘CARICOM Meeting on Smaller Economies Issues in the FTAA & Preparatory Meeting for the CARICOM Sub-regional Round Table’ was held in Barbados, June 7 to 8. The Caribbean Regional Negotiating Machinery (RNM) provided an update to the meeting on the status of Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) talks and formal/informal discussions at the level of the Trade Negotiations Committee (TNC) regarding the scope and structure of negotiations, pursuant to the Miami Ministerial mandates.

The Special Meeting of the Council for Human and Social Development (COHSOD): Culture was convened at the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat Headquarters, Bank of Guyana Building, Georgetown, Guyana on 2-3 June 2004 under the Chairmanship of the Hon. Edward Hart, Minister of State in the Ministry of Community Development, Culture and Gender Affairs, Trinidad and Tobago.

CARICOM Ministers of Education met in Retreat in Georgetown, Guyana over a 2-day period of 3-4 June 2004 to discuss challenges facing the Region's educational system and to make recommendations on new directions, programmes and policies. The meeting was chaired by the Hon. Hazel Manning, Minister of Education, Trinidad and Tobago and facilitated by Dr. Henry Jeffrey, Minister of Education, Guyana.

We, the Ministerial Representatives responsible for trade, meeting in Georgetown, Guyana, on the 3rd and 4th June, 20041, examined the state of progress in the negotiations in the World Trade Organisation [WTO] based on the mandates of the Fourth and Fifth Ministerial Conferences held at Doha and Cancun respectively with a view to identifying common elements for a G90 platform as a contribution to the G90 Ministerial Meeting scheduled in Mauritius on 12-14 July 2004;

GEORGETOWN, GUYANA – “Our deliberations have been constructive. They have enabled a meeting of minds, in an atmosphere where views of G90 constituent members have been ventilated freely”. This according to Hon. Clement Rohee, CARICOM Ministerial Spokesperson for World Trade Organization (WTO) issues and Minister of Foreign Trade and International Cooperation, Guyana. Minister Rohee made these remarks at a press conference yesterday evening, at the close of a G90 encounter held in Georgetown, Guyana, June 3 to 4.

GEORGETOWN, GUYANA – A meeting of G90 Ministers and Ministerial representatives got underway today in Georgetown, Guyana. The two-day meeting is expected to contribute to efforts to revive and give impetus to stalled World Trade Organization (WTO) talks. The objectives of this meeting are to_ 1) examine the current status of Doha Round negotiations; 2) explore possible elements of a July framework package; and, 3) decide on the steps that the G90 would have to take between now and the end of July. European and Caribbean leaders ended an historic meeting here today with the EU assuring the Caribbean that its interests would be constantly borne in mind in deliberations within the EU, and in EU representation in deliberations of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). This, in response to Caribbean concerns about recent developments and the outlook for their key exports of sugar and bananas in the EU and in the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

The meeting agreed to further strengthen EU-CARIFORUM cooperation in key common areas, HIV/AIDS, Drugs and Crime and Security.

The Heads of State and of Government of Caribbean ACP States (CARIFORUM) and the European Union represented by the Troika, met in Guadalajara Mexico on 29 May 2004, on the occasion of the III Summit of Heads of State and of Government of the European Union and Latin America and the Caribbean. They reaffirmed their commitment to the principles and priorities established by previous summits held in Rio de Janeiro 1999, Madrid in 2002, and the recently concluded Summit held in Guadalajara.
