The Second Meeting of Directors of Youth of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) was held in Trinidad and Tobago May 7 - 9, 2001 under the chairmanship of Mr. Wilton John, Director of Youth Affairs. Participants were drawn from Member States and included Directors of Youth and representatives of regional and international agencies, educational institutions and youth organisations.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Owen Arthur of Barbados, the current Chairman of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), and OAS Secretary General Cesar Gaviria agreed to join efforts of the OAS and CARICOM on Haiti into a Joint Mission to be led by Gaviria and former Dominican Prime Minister Dame Eugenia Charles.

Chairman of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Rt. Hon. A delegation from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is currently in Suriname holding consultations with officials of the Government, the Labour Movement and the business sector. Chairman of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM, Barbados Prime Minister, Mr. Owen Arthur, is leading the delegation which traveled to the CARICOM Member State on 6 May 2001.

Mr Andrew Davies, 23, a national of Jamaica, residing in Barbados, has captured the top prize in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat Book Cover Design competition.

Mr Davies' entry was selected from among more than 200 entries in the competition to design the cover of a book about CARICOM entitled "Our Caribbean Community". The competition, for Caribbean Community nationals between the ages of 14 and 24, was conducted during January and February 2001, and attracted young artists from almost every Member State of CARICOM.

Staff of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat are benefitting from a new in-house training facility, the Learning Resource Centre (LRC), which is intended to strengthen the capability of the executive arm of the Caribbean Community. The implementation of the project was funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) within the Extension of the Caribbean Regional Institutional Strengthening Project (CRISP). The sum of CDN$50,000 was utilised to acquire training material in print, audio, video and electronic formats and related equipment.

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is moving closer to having an inter-sectoral agenda for youth in the regional integration movement. A draft regional strategy for youth development, which is intended to engage them in promoting their own cause headlines the agenda for a meeting of CARICOM Directors of Youth scheduled for 7-9 May in Trinidad and Tobago.

The Port-of-Spain meeting is expected to, among other things, take action that will lead towards implementation of the draft regional strategy.

Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community, Mr Edwin Carrington, has re-emphasised that establishment of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) is imperative to the creation of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME).

The Secretary-General, who is in Jamaica for a week long series of public education programmes, 24-30 April 2001 to build public awareness of the CCJ, stressed that dialogue with the people of the Region, including the stakeholders, is a fundamental step leading to the establishment of the Court.
