(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Thirtieth Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) opens in Georgetown, Guyana on July 2, 2009 against the backdrop of the Twentieth Anniversary of the Grand Anse Declaration and Work Programme for the Advancement of the Integration Movement.

The Grand Anse declaration was signed in July 1989, in Grand Anse, Grenada.

The Caribbean Community views with grave concern the developments in Honduras which led to the removal by a military intervention of the democratically elected Head of State of the Republic of Honduras, President Manuel Zelaya, and to his expulsion to Costa Rica.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Guyana’s Cleveland Forde and Trinidad and Tobago’s Shermin Lasaldo ran away with US$1,200 and the top trophies as they emerged the champion male and female respectively at the fifth staging of the Annual CARICOM 10K Road Race in Guyana on Sunday.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Guyana has given the starter’s signal_ It is all systems go for the fifth staging of the Annual Caribbean Community (CARICOM) 10K Road Race set for Sunday 28 June.

The Local Organising Committee and the CARICOM Secretariat have indicated their satisfaction with preparations for the Race so far, noting that “it will be a 10K with a difference and perhaps the largest in terms of participation” since to date, runners were still attempting to register for the race.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Region’s Chief Medical Officers (CMOs) are devising a Port Health protocol for the Influenza A H1N1 virus which will be presented to Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Heads of Government at their Thirtieth Meeting scheduled for 2-5 July in Guyana.

CARICOM public health officials believe that countries need to be extremely cautious in dealing with the Influenza A H1N1 virus, commonly know as Swine Flu, and are drawing up the protocol out of an abundance of caution.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) June 26 is International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, and CARICOM Member States are embarking on a series of activities to mark the day.

The CARICOM Secretariat in collaboration with the Directors of National Councils on Drug Abuse is leading the way with the development of activities to sensitise the public - specifically women - about the negative ripple effects of drug trafficking.
