(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) welcomes the release of Mr. Yvon Neptune, Prime Minister of Haiti in the Aristide government, following an order by the Appeals Court of Haiti. CARICOM had repeatedly condemned the abuse of due process and of the rule of law associated with the prolonged detention without trial of Mr. Neptune.

The Rt. Hon. Owen Arthur, Prime Minister Of Barbados, and CARICOM Head of Government coordinating implementation of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME), highlighted xenophobia as a factor undermining ready access to a regional pool of skills and labour.

Addressing the opening ceremony of Caribbean Connect, a High-Level three-day Symposium today in Bridgetown, on the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME), host Prime Minister Arthur cited the significant potential of a regional labour force in the new Community arrangement.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) At least two CARICOM Youth Ambassadors (CYAs) have ensured that the voices of youth resounded on the issue of Sexual Health and Reproduction, through their participation in a panel discussion held Tuesday 11 July in Saint Lucia, in observance of World Population Day.

The exercise was staged by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and involved more than 30 CYAs, as well as local and regional officials. It was moderated by Dominica’s CARICOM Youth Ambassador, Fenella Wenham.

The Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professions (CAAM-HP) has fully accredited the University of the West Indies’ Medical Programme, lauding it for its “outstanding students, enthusiastic and committed teachers including residents (house staff).

In a letter to the Vice Chancellor of the UWI, Professor Nigel Harris, the Board of CAAM-HP noted that “graduates of the MBBS course of UWI, achieve high international standards at the time of graduation.”

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The countries and peoples of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) were recently celebrated in Cuba as part of its Twenty-Sixth Caribbean Festival, Feast of Fire held 3-9 July in the city of Santiago de Cuba.

With the Ninth Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA 1X) billed for 22 September-1 October in Trinidad and Tobago, CARICOM’s Consultant for CARIFESTA, Dr. Carole Maison-Bishop used the Festival as a platform to promote the Caribbean cultural exposition.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) If all goes well, Alien Invasive Species (IAS) such as the Hibiscus Mealybug which destroyed, among others, okra crops in some CARICOM Member States could well be a thing of the past in the Caribbean. This could be the case as the Caribbean has mapped a policy framework for tackling IAS with the development of the Caribbean Regional Invasive Species Intervention Strategy (CRISIS) and the establishment of the Caribbean Agricultural Health and Food Safety Agency (CAHFSA)
