SALUTATIONS

It is with great satisfaction and optimism that I address you today as one of the new generation of leaders who are emerging throughout the Caribbean to take responsibility for the political, social and economic development of our Region in a rapidly changing global environment.

First, I want to thank the Government and people of Saint Lucia for welcoming us to this beautiful country, and for making the splendid arrangements for this historic Conference.

NEW GLOBAL REALITIES DEMAND NEW CARICOM TRADE POLICY GROS-ISLET, SAINT LUCIA – While Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Countries are committed to and are active participants in international trade negotiations, some uncertainty has emerged amongst Member States concerning the benefits to be derived and costs entailed. There is also mounting concern over the scope and pace of the adjustment process, which would result from the conclusion of any or all of these negotiations. (CARICOM Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana) Saint Vincent and the Grenadines male and female athletes Pomunos Ballentyne and Sonia Ackbar, outran their Caribbean counterparts by emerging as the first place winners at the Inaugural Caribbean Community (CARICOM) 10 K Road Race. The competition was ran at the dawn of Sunday 3 July in Saint Lucia, where the 26th Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM is being hosted.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana) A number of Regional business entities in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) including two Regional air carriers have come out in support of the Inaugural CARICOM 10 K Road Race, which takes place in Saint Lucia on Sunday 3 July 2005.

To date, LIAT, BWIA West Indies Airways, Air Jamaica, Grace Kennedy, Banks DIH Ltd of Guyana and Arawak Printers of Saint Lucia have signalled their intent to support the event. The Ministry of Sports in Saint Lucia is also a strong supporter of the road race.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana) A new line of Information and Communication Technolgy (ICT), including an infokiosk, will be installed at the CARICOM Secretariat's New Headquarters Building at Liliendaal, Greater Georgetown, Guyana, by July 30. The ICT installation project is being undertaken by a team of technical experts from TATA Infotech Limited of India, and is in keeping with an earlier commitment by the Government of India to computerise the New Headquarters Building which staff are set to occupy by July 2005.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana)   The Twenty-Sixth Regular Meeting of The Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) will be convened from 3-6 July in Saint Lucia, where Heads of Government are expected to deliberate on a number of pressing Regional matters. Under the chairmanship of Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, Dr the Honourable Kenny Anthony, the Conference will focus heavily on the shaping of a new globally competitive economic path for the Regional integration movement.
