The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has received the assurances of the Government of Italy's representative in the Region that Information and Communications Technology (ICT) are among the areas in which Italy is interested in increased cooperation with CARICOM. While giving this commitment to the Secretary-General of CARICOM, His Excellency Mr. Edwin Carrington on Monday (July12), Italy's Plenipotentiary Representative to CARICOM, His Excellency Mr. Gerardo Carante proposed a mechanism of consultations between CARICOM and Italy on all matters of common interest.

The Secretariat of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) wishes to inform that, in accordance with the decision taken by CARICOM heads of Government at their recent conference in Grenada "to create a channel of engagement with the interim administration of Haiti", a delegation of CARICOM foreign ministers will be visiting Haiti 13-14 July 2004.

CARICOM Secretary-General Edwin Carrington today reacted with surprise and some disappointment to reports in sections of the regional media that CARICOM had "called for the release from detention of former Prime Minister Yvon Neptune as one of the conditions for recognition of the Interim Administration in Haiti, as well as for a date certain for elections". Secretary-General Carrington was categorical, stating,

Long serving staff and perhaps Godfather of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) movement, Mr. Byron Blake has called it a day after completing thirty years of yeoman service with CARICOM Secretariat.

Blake, dubbed "Mr. CARICOM" was instrumental in the creation and sustainability of a number of initiatives including the crafting of the Regional integration movement.

The Twenty-Fifth Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community was held in Grand Anse, Grenada from 4 to 7 July 2004. Dr. the Right Honourable Keith Mitchell, Prime Minister of Grenada and Chairman of CARICOM presided over the Meeting of the Conference, the work programme of which sought to advance the process of regional integration.
