(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Last week Thursday, Adrian Augier, co-Chair of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Regional Task Force on Cultural Industries, told a meeting of youth, culture and sport ministers that the Caribbean Region had failed to maximise its advantage in the creative cultural industries and as such had forfeited significant potential revenue which could be derived from their top-earning artists and entrepreneurs.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     In the wake of calls to harness the resources of sports for development, the CARICOM Council on Human and Social Development (COHSOD) at their 22nd Meeting in Georgetown, last week, agreed to establish a Regional Task Force on Sports Tourism to develop a strategy for harnessing the Region’s potential in sports.

The COHSOD, which focused on Youth Sports and Culture, reviewed evidence to support the claim that Sport Tourism could yield significant social and economic gains for the Region.

That previous occasion was the launch of the Task Force here at the Secretariat when we were embarking on a new and challenging assignment with a great deal of optimism_ to prepare a Regional Development Strategy and Action Plan for the Cultural Industries in CARICOM.

The Meeting convened under the theme, Culture, Youth and Sport_ strategic repositioning for human and economic development has provided a platform for robust discussions on the youth, sport and culture and development agenda within the Community.

The COHSOD has always been and continues to be a critical vehicle for examining and assessing the development of our human resources within the Region. It continues to provide dynamic leadership for national and regional development by ensuring that effective policies in human and social development are formulated and implemented.
