(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) It is an honour and a privilege for me to recognize and celebrate the women and girls of the Caribbean Community on International Women’s Day, 8 March 2012, with this statement.
international womens day
I am honored to be appointed as the CARICOM Advocate for Gender Justice. Gender is about both men and women and it is fitting that this initiative is launched on March 8th, International Day of Women. This may seem to be a contradiction, but it is not. Women have always been in the forefront of the struggle for equality, justice and peace for all. However, because of gender inequality, their contribution is often neither recognized nor remembered. How many of you present today know of the work of our own Claudia Jones?
(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The CARICOM Secretariat is honoured to salute the women and girls of the Caribbean Community on the occasion of International Women’s Day (IWD), 8 March, 2009.
This annual celebration gives us a special opportunity to reflect on the achievements on the path towards gender equality and women’s empowerment.
Once again, as Secretary General of CARICOM, I extend best wishes to the women of the Caribbean Community on the occasion of International Women’s Day, 2003.
The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) once again joins with the rest of the international community in commemorating the United Nations designated International Women's Day. This occasion provides an opportunity to recognize the significant role women have played in the life, livelihood and sustainability of our Region and indeed, in other parts of the world and to record our appreciation therefor.
Happy International Women's Day 2002 to the women of the Caribbean Community.
As we in the Caribbean once again join the rest of the world in commemorating the United Nations designated International Women's Day, we are all especially aware of the historic significance of this particular celebration.
This year's commemoration of International Women's Day, 8th March 1999, is of very special significance. The World stands on the threshold of a new millennium and the next message will be the very first of the new century. The United Nations has already begun preparations for a Special Assembly on Women to be held in June 2000. There, the Caribbean will join the rest of the world in assessing the progress made in achieving greater gender equality for women in the period following the Fourth World Conference on Women held in Beijing in 1995.
March 8, 1998 marks the eighty-fourth year that the world will be commemorating International Women's Day. As we, in the Caribbean, take pride in the progress we have made in furthering the objective of regional integration and prepare to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Chaguaramas this July, we must also take stock of progress in moving our Region towards the imperative of gender equality and social justice.
