CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Haiti’s CARICOM Youth Ambassador, Leticia Cadet, on Thursday, made an impassioned plea to the Caribbean Community to help re-build, as a matter of priority, the education system in Haiti.
At a special meeting of the Council for Human and Social Development (COHSOD) in Paramaribo, Suriname, Ms Cadet recalled with obvious grief the devastation caused by the earthquake, which crippled Port-au-Prince on 12 January, leaving in its wake a climbing death toll of more than 200, 000.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Even as the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is deeply saddened by the devastation in Haiti, it is continuing to ensure that all efforts are made to render assistance in the earthquake torn nation.

The CARICOM Secretariat hosted a special briefing linking the regional media via video conference at its Georgetown, Guyana headquarters on Friday January 22, 2010. The media briefing was convened to update the Region on the Community’s coordinated response to the Haitian disaster.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown Guyana) Haiti is expected to participate in at least one component of the Caribbean Single Market and Economy, (CSME) by the first quarter of 2009.

The fundamental components of the CSME are free movement of goods and services, free movement of people and skills, and the right of establishment of business entities within the Community. Haiti’s participation in the CSME will increase the size of CARICOM’s market under the CSME to an unprecedented 15 million people.

The team will be headed by Jamaica’s former Director of Elections, Mr. Noel Lee, and will include observers from other Member States.

I welcome you all most sincerely to this Fifteenth Meeting of the Council for Human and Social Development.

This Meeting is taking place at a critical juncture in the life of the Community. The CARICOM Single Market was established in January this year. Soon after, a new democratically elected government in Haiti returned to the fold of the Community and took its rightful place at the table of the Conference of Heads of Government in St Kitts and Nevis in July 2006.
