The Ministerial Meeting on Climate Change and Development in preparation for the United Nations Conference on Climate Change was convened on Tuesday, 15 September at the Bay Gardens Hotel in Castries, Saint Lucia. Honourable Stephenson King, Prime Minister of Saint Lucia presided for the first part; after which the Hon. Richard Frederick, Minister of Physical Planning, the Environment, Housing, Urban Renewal and Local Government, Saint Lucia, assumed the Chair.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Thirty-Second Special Meeting of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) on Agriculture opens on Friday 18 September, 2009 at the Le Meridien Pegasus, Georgetown, Guyana.

COTED Officials began their meeting from Wednesday September 16, 2009 at the same location.

 (CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community, His Excellency Edwin Carrington, on Tuesday, told some of the Region’s negotiators and policy makers to be resolute and vigilant in their positions for a New Climate Change Agreement.

This resolve must be maintained even while consulting with other Parties of similar interests in order to achieve “the greatest solidarity among Member States to advance the Region’s Climate Change agenda.”

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Saint Lucia’s Prime Minister, Honourable Stephenson King has asserted that while negotiations of a new Global Climate Change Agreement are about ‘give and take’ there would be no ‘horse-trading’ of the inalienable rights of survival and development of the peoples of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

  Chairman of the Caribbean Community H.E. Bharrat Jagdeo sent an urgent call to Ministers at a special meeting on Climate Change and Development in Saint Lucia to remain consistent in the negotiations leading up to the United Nations Climate Change conference set for Copenhagen in December. He also urged them to honour the spirit of the July 2009 Liliendaal Declaration on Climate Change and Development.

  (CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has stepped up its meetings as it continues its negotiations process in the run up to the 15th Meeting of the Conference of Parties (COP15) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) set for December 7-18 in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The series of meetings forms part of the Community’s strategy to highlight its priorities and position itself to ensure that the Region’s issues are fully addressed at Copenhagen.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Negotiations for a Trade and Development Agreement between the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and Canada are set to begin in early November. This was decided at a preparatory meeting between Ministers of both parties held on Friday in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.
