SURINAMESE DIPLOMAT ELECTED AS NEXT OAS ASSISTANT SECRETARY GENERAL CHRIST CHURCH, BARBADOS – Director General of the Caribbean Regional Negotiating Machinery (RNM) Ambassador Dr. Richard Bernal welcomed the election Tuesday evening (June 7) - on the occasion of the XXXV Meeting of the General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Fort Lauderdale, Florida - of Ambassador Albert R. Ramdin to be the next Assistant Secretary General of the OAS.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana) The General Elections held on 25 May 2005 were monitored by the CARICOM Electoral Observer Mission at the invitation of the Government of the Republic of Suriname. The six-member Observer Team's principal functions were to monitor the preparations for the Elections, the campaign, the conduct of the poll and the counting of the ballots, as well as to assess the outcome of the Elections.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana) CARICOM Heads of Government at their Sixteenth Inter-Sessional Meeting in Suriname took an important step in dealing with the issue of natural disaster by placing the subject as part of the responsibility of the Community Council of Ministers - CARICOM's second highest body.

The Heads of Government, in taking note of the devastation which countries in the Region have been subjected to in the last six months, agreed to continue to provide such assistance as they can to the most seriously affected, including Grenada and Guyana.

Ronaldo Venetiaan as he prepares to preside over the Sixteenth Inter-Sessional Meeting of CARICOM Heads of Government on Wednesday and Thursday 16-17 February.
