The Caribbean Sea, with its high level of biodiversity, covers less than one percent of the world's ocean area (2.75 million sq km), nonetheless, it directly supports the economies of 34 coastal and small island countries and territories. It is a large marine ecosystem characterized by coral reefs, mangroves, and sea grasses as well as sandy beaches and rocky shores.
BACKGROUND
Following the devastation caused by hurricanes Irma and Maria, the Government of Sint Maarten embarked on a large-scale recovery and reconstruction program, based on the principle of building back a more resilient Sint Maarten. Since January 2018, the World Bank is assisting the Government of Sint Maarten in the establishment of this program. A significant component of this program will be financed through a Trust Fund financed by the Netherlands, managed by the World Bank and implemented by Sint Maarten.
The Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC) has secured project preparation funding from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) Project Preparation Facility (PPF) to develop a full funding proposal for a project titled, “Building the Adaptive Capacity of Sugarcane Farmers in Northern Belize”.
