The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has voiced its opposition to threats by the United States to suspend Haiti from the Organisation of American States (OAS), because of controversies surrounding that country's May 21st election results.

CARICOM Secretary-General, Mr. Edwin Carrington said the Community Council of Ministers meeting in Barbados at the time of the disturbing developments were shocked by the news and were " inclined against any action against Haiti at this time."

I gather that this is one in a series of meetings being held here to continue the process of developing and strengthening the legal and institutional framework to enable us to move forward in the achievement of our objectives - the deepening and widening of Caribbean integration.

The Sixth Meeting of the Community Council of Ministers - the second highest Organ of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) - opened at the Sherbourne Centre in Barbados this morning with a determination to focus on issues that would lead to the creation of a more robust and relevant Community.

The Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) has responsibility for overseeing all trade and economic development issues and covers all economic sectors of the Community.

This Meeting, its ninth focussed on the agriculture sector in addition to the establishment of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME). Attention was also paid to CARICOM external economic and trade relations and intra-regional trade arrangements.

While seeking to ensure that the key elements for the establishment of the CSME are in place namely, the following are being attended to_

Accommodation for overseas participants in the seventh Caribbean Festival of Arts and Culture (CARIFESTA VII) to be hosted by St Kitts and Nevis will be available on time says the island's Minister responsible for CARIFESTA, the Hon Jacinth Henry-Martin.

During a tour of the housing site with the Minister responsible for housing, the Hon Cedric Liburd, Minister Jacinth Henry-Martin said she was very pleased with the pace of work on the houses, and indicated she was confident of an on time completion.
