It is indeed my pleasure and honour to address you on behalf of the Peoples and Governments of the Caribbean Community on the occasion of this, the Sixth UK - Caribbean Forum.
(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The palm tree which is so synonymous with the tourism industry in the Caribbean is under threat from a small red mite that has taken root and is severely affecting palm trees across the Caribbean Basin.
It was revealed by a scientist yesterday (15 July 2008) at a symposium on invasive species in Miami that the Red Palm Mite, which is believed to have first arrived in the Caribbean in 2003, could now be found in 12 Caribbean islands, Venezuela and two counties in the US State of Florida.

1. The Sixth UK-Caribbean Forum took place in London 14-16 July. The Forum was co-chaired by the Hon. Baldwin Spencer, Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of the Government of Antigua and Barbuda and current Chair of the Council for Foreign and Community Relations of the Caribbean Community, and by the Rt. Hon. David Miliband, MP, Secretary of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and co-chair of the Sixth UK-Caribbean Forum the Honourable Baldwin Spencer, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda told the closing ceremony of the Forum that he felt certain that what had been discussed over the past two days would serve to enhance the already strong relationship between the two sides.
(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) While the importance of a coordinated approach to deal with the issue of invasive species in the Caribbean is widely accepted there remains a challenge to secure funding for the work to be done to tackle the range of issues arising from the threat of invasive species.
To this end when the Caribbean Invasive Species Working Group (CISWG) holds its annual meeting on Friday 18 July in Miami , it is anticipated that much discussion will focus on mechanisms for collaboration on the issue of invasive species in the Caribbean Basi
