(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The critical importance of screening for breast cancer to ensure early detection and treatment was underscored Friday at a Seminar on the occasion of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, at the headquarters of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana.

The seminar, held on October 30, 2009, was organised by the CARICOM Secretariat Staff Association. It was intended to create awareness of the disease among the general staff population.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana) The Thirteenth Meeting of the Council for Human and Social Development (COHSOD) of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has adopted a recommendation by the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees (CANOC) for the quadrennial staging of what will be known as The CARICOM Invitational Games.

The first games are set for 2009 after the Olympics in Trinidad and Tobago and will include as core sports, athletics, aquatics, netball and a maximum of seven other sports to be chosen by the country hosting the games.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Young people from six Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries, yesterday, completed a three-day training programme in Edutainment ,designed to assist them to influence their peers positively through that method.

The CARICOM Secretariat partnered with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for a Regional Workshop on “Translating Knowledge into Action - Training Youth to Teach Youth through Edutainment” from October 26-28, 2009, at the Theatre Guild, Georgetown, Guyana.

(Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Meaningful and lasting partnerships are critical to an effective response to HIV and AIDS in thCARICOM e Pan Caribbean region, particularly in the face of stern social and economic challenges.

These were the views expressed when the 65-member Pan Caribbean Partnership Against HIV and AIDS (PANCAP) opened its ninth Annual General Meeting on 28 October in St George’s, Grenada.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The CARICOM Secretariat is facilitating a mission for twenty five Students from Barbados to St. Kitts and Nevis as it wraps up a project entitled_ Students engaging the CSME through Field Promotion.

This mission is expected to be concluded before the end of 2009 and is the last in the project. Workshops as well as the Student Missions were facilitated by the CARICOM Secretariat with assistance provided by the 9th EDF European Development Fund (EDF), Caribbean Integration Support Programme (CISP).

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) His Excellency Edwin Carrington has stated that he knows of no plans by the Community or its Secretariat to license journalists.

The Secretary-General said he made this “absolutely clear” to President of the Association of Caribbean Mediaworkers, Mr. Wesley Gibbings, in a conversation earlier this week.
