(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) In spite of the global economic downturn that has spawned several challenges, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) had the capacity to turn the situation into an opportunity to exploit its attractiveness as a dynamic business location, His Excellency Edwin Carrington, Secretary-General of CARICOM said Wednesday.

Addressing the Commonwealth Business Forum in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, Mr. Carrington declared the Community “open for business” and highlighted its appeal particularly to the Commonwealth.

Our focus this year on “Partnering for a More Equitable and Sustainable Future” would be a timely one in any set of circumstances but is especially so at this particular time as we confront the effects of a global economic meltdown.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Pan Caribbean Partnership Against HIV and AIDS (PANCAP) has received an additional 5 million Euro for the execution of a regional project on the prevention of HIV and AIDS in the Caribbean. With this new allocation, the financial support from the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany for CARICOM and the project “HIV and AIDS in the Caribbean” totals 21.5 million Euros.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Federal Republic of Germany has deepened its cooperation with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) through the extension of a financial agreement to support the work of the Pan-Caribbean Partnership against HIV and AIDS (PANCAP).

The CARICOM Secretariat and Germany signed on Tuesday November 24, 2009 to commence the implementation of a second component of a Financial Cooperation Agreement, of five (5) Million Euros. The signing ceremony took place in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) met with their Australian counterpart on Wednesday, the Honourable Stephen Smith, in preparation for a meeting on Saturday 28 November between their respective Heads of Government.

The meeting took place in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago where both parties are preparing for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) which begins in Port of Spain on Friday 27 November.
