(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) It has always been my intention to interface with this group but circumstances have conspired to prevent me from doing so until now. So today is indeed a special occasion for me.
(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Let me start by welcoming you all here today to this the Fifteenth Meeting of the COFCOR, in the pleasant surroundings of Paramaribo. As usual, the host country has left no stone unturned to put excellent arrangements in place to facilitate the conduct of our business. For this we are grateful to the Government and people of Suriname.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Excellency, it is my great pleasure and honour to welcome you to Guyana and to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat, on this historic occasion of the presentation of your credentials as the first Plenipotentiary Representative of the Republic of Singapore to the Caribbean Community. This ceremony today heralds a welcome development in deepening CARICOM-Singapore relations.
Thank you, Secretary General Larocque, for your kind words. It is a great honour, and a great pleasure as well, to be visiting the region again.
I will keep my remarks brief. Let me simply point out that Singapore has always and continues to value our relationship with the countries of the Caribbean. Our relations with the region date back to 1971, when Singapore and Trinidad & Tobago first established diplomatic relations.
Like many of the CARICOM's member states, we are a small country. And like many of your member states as well, we are a small island state.
