A Foreign Ministerial delegation representing The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Member States will journey to Washington next week for the first face-to-face contact with the new US Secretary of State, retired General Colin Powell.

The future of CARICOM-USA Relations is expected to feature prominently in the deliberations when the two sides meet. This is in addition to the vexing issue of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation in Development (OECD) Harmful Tax Competition Policy.

Foundations of co-operation have been laid with other missions who are in Guyana to observe the 2001 General elections. This was stated by Chief of the CARICOM Observer Mission to Guyana, Justice R. Carl Rattray at a Press Conference today Thursday March 15 hosted by Secretary General of CARICOM, Mr Edwin Carrington at the CARICOM Secratriat in Georgetown.

The Caribbean Community is moving to ensure that the dreaded Foot and Mouth and Mad Cow diseases do not impact negatively on the livestock industry and the economies of the Region. To this end the Region's Public Health and Veterinary officers will meet in Guyana on 27 March 2001 to formulate a regional initiative to tackle these potentially devastating diseases.

One of some 150 young artists from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Member States will carve his or her name in CARICOM's history by submitting the winning design for the cover of a book on the regional integration movement being published by the CARICOM Secretariat.

Young artists throughout the Community were encouraged to showcase their skills in the competition for the cover design, which was launched at the CXC Headquarters in Barbados on 9 January this year, and was advertised throughout the Region.

This occasion provides an opportunity to recognize the significant role women have played in the life, livelihood and sustainability of our Region and indeed, in other parts of the world and to record our appreciation therefor.

A high-level delegation from the East African Community (EAC) Secretariat comprising of senior officials from Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda was scheduled to arrive last evening on a two-day visit in the country.

One of the main objectives of the study tour is to learn from the experiences of other institutions in regional economic integration, especially regarding their own efforts at achieving internal free trade and the establishment of a Customs Union.

At the Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government in Georgetown, Guyana in July 1986, the then Prime Minister of Barbados, the Rt Hon Errol Barrow, asserted that it was the "collective wisdom" of the Caribbean people that would make for unity and integration within the Community. He was however, adamant that_

"the promise of the regional integration movement, even in the area of trade, cannot be realised unless we find new ways of communicating to our people the meaning and purpose of all our regional institutions"

As a Caribbean man, born, bred and brought up a Caribbean man, I know that I speak on behalf of all fellow Caribbean people, especially the business community and businesses like BWIA with a broad Caribbean raison d'etre, when I say that we are indeed proud, delighted and appreciative that our Caribbean leaders have agreed to bring a Caribbean Court of Justice into being.
