San Jose, Costa Rica, CMC- The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) says it will be assisting The Bahamas in implementing programmes to increase food production, reduce the import bill and improve agricultural health and food safety. Bahamians on Monday 7 May elected the Progressive Liberal Party led by the Honourable Perry G. Christie to form the next government.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen Greater Georgetown, Guyana) A 12-member Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Mission will observe the May 7 General Elections in The Bahamas.

The team will be drawn from ten Member States and the CARICOM Secretariat. The Core Team, comprising the Chief of Mission, Mr. Orrette Fisher Director of Elections, Jamaica; Deputy Chief of Mission, Mr. Gasper Jn. Baptiste, Deputy Chief Elections Officer, Saint Lucia, and the Secretariat staffers arrived in Nassau, The Bahamas, on 1 May. The other Observers will arrive on 3 May.

Caribbean governments have agreed to implement an aggressive advertising programme to get tourism, the main foreign exchange earner for a number of countries, back on track following the decline in arrivals after the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States.

This was a major decision emerging from the Summit on Tourism held at Atlantis Resort, Paradise Island, The Bahamas 8-9 December 2001, under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister of The Bahamas, Rt. Hon Hubert Ingraham.
